Legacies at the Lake: 20th Century South Asian Heritage in the Cowichan Lake Area

 

Canada’s South Asian population has made significant contributions to our history since passage began in the early 1900s. In particular, the forestry industry in British Columbia was successful in large part thanks to the hard work of its South Asian, Chinese, and Japanese workers. 

 

Although the modern use of the term “South Asian” encompasses people from Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, the Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka, 20th century South Asian immigration to Canada mostly involved people from modern-day India and Pakistan—specifically the Punjab region, which was part of India until 1947. 

 

In the Cowichan Lake area, we do not see records of people from other parts of South Asia arriving until much later in the 20th century, and into the 2000s. So, when we talk about South Asian history in this region, we are talking about people with Punjabi heritage.

 

It is also important to note that much of the information we have comes from census records, which do not account for undocumented immigration. Although many people did later obtain legal citizenship in the 1940s-50s, we do not always know about their early time in Canada. Because of that, we will likely never know the full range of experiences. Nonetheless, the ones which we do have are invaluable.
